Laying your business’ data foundation

While there are numerous analytics, data companies, and apps out there we are going to focus on the two that every business owner should have as soon as they set up a website — and they are both free.

Digital data cannot be collected retroactively, so in order to make decisions off of your past data, there has to be a history of past data collected.

#1 Google Analytics

You have most likely heard about Google Analytics, but if you haven’t, sign up for an account hereright now.

Once you have created an account you will have to put a snippet of code onto every page of your website, or if you are using a CMS like WordPress or Squarespace there should be a place to put your tracking ID in. If you are having trouble, reply to this email and I can help you out.

Google Analytics is tremendously useful for making marketing decisions, evaluating what worked and what didn’t, looking into who your audience is and where they came from.

In future tips, I will be sharing with you some of my favorite data reports, and important metrics to keep an eye on.

#2 Google Search Console

Formerly called Google Webmaster Tools, Google Search Console is another data source to look into the health of your website and see how organic (Google) search users are responding to your content.

If you haven’t already verified your site on Search Console, go here, click “Add A Property” and follow the steps to add your site. Once you have your account verified then it will start to collect valuable data on your site.
